Will I get back to who I was before? This is probably the most frequent question I am asked when I see people who have had a traumatic brain injury. Surprisingly, the answer I give is “ I certainly hope not!” Healthy living is about moving forward, changing, constantly improving. I am not the same person I was yesterday, none of your friends are the same people they were when you had your brain injury, and no you are not going to be who you were before. Recovery and rehabilitation must be about looking forward. As your skills and abilities improve your goals for your life must be in front of you – you can’t move forward while looking over your shoulder. Define who you want to be – how you want to grow – what you want to accomplish. No, you will not get back to who you were before, but the new person you are becoming will likely surpass your wildest expectations – if you keep moving forward!
